THE WORLD'S 50 BEST RESTAURANTS
In 2018 Biscay hosted one of the world's top gastronomic events: the culinary equivalent of the Oscars.
Every year the journal Restaurant draws up a list of the world's best restaurants. Biscay was not selected by chance: the Basque Country has the highest concentration of Michelin-starred restaurants per capita in the world, and many of them are in Biscay.
EUROPEAN RUGBY FINALS
The finals of Europe's top two club rugby tournaments were held at Bilbao's San Mamés stadium. European Professional Club Rugby (EPCR) selected the stadium as the venue for both the Champions Cup and Challenge Cup finals.
Those lucky enough to be there ere were able to enjoy the sport's biggest annual events in a location that was determined to give its all to make this a Europe-wide celebration of rugby.
MTV EUROPE MUSIC AWARDS (EMA)
Biscay became the global capital of music with live performances from worldwide stars and a following of millions all over the world via social media.
The MTV Europe Music Awards (EMA) are among the biggest live shows in the world. Biscay was chosen to host their 25th edition.
STAGE OF THE VUELTA A ESPAÑA
The Vuelta or Tour of Spain is one of the main events on the international cycling calendar. A stage was run from Getxo to the Balcón de Bizkaia lookout point. It drew an average audience of over 10 million viewers across Europe, and in all 43 million people tuned in at some time during the four-and-a-half-hour live broadcast.
Techstars Startup Week™ is one of the most significant, inspirational events on the international entrepreneurial calendar. Previous host cities include Los Angeles, New York, Sydney, Taipei, Bangkok, Mexico City and Dublin. In 2019 Bilbao and the rest of Bizkaia hosted the Bilbao Biscay Startup Week, a celebration of the ecosystems of innovation & start-ups in Biscay. Over five days, numerous events were staged to showcase the whole local community and promote learning and connections between entrepreneurs, corporations, investors and all those in general interested in innovation, entrepreneurship and start-ups.
