Development of the aeronautics sector in Biscay

Biscay has been focusing on aeronautics as a driver for economic development since the 1960s. The determination and commitment of businesses and institutions alike during the industrial crisis in Biscay led to the growth of new, forward-looking economic activities and a transformation in which aeronautics became one of the key sectors for economic development.

It is a strategic sector for the economy and the fabric of business in Biscay in terms of both the development of high value-added products and the creation of skilled jobs.

The sector comprises 64 firms, a research and development centre and four corporate R&D&i units. Between them, these firms invoice €2.457 billion and employ 2600 people in Biscay.

Their level of internationalisation and external relations is high, with 175 establishments abroad dependent on the experience and track record of the sector, a high concentration of suppliers and significant technological and R&D projects.

The UK, Germany and France account for over 50% of the sector's exports.

A stand-out feature is the CFAA (Aeronautics Advanced Manufacturing Centre), which marks a new structure for market-oriented applied research, promoted and funded by the Basque Government and the Provincial Council of Biscay.
